The temporo-mandibular joint is the joint where the mandible, or jawbone, attaches to the skull. Since this joint is in heavy use all day, every day, for talking and chewing, it is very prone to injury or inflammation. Irritation from this joint can lead to:
- Ear pain
- Jaw pain
- Temple/cheek pain
- Jaw popping or clicking
- Jaw dislocation
Because it is right next to the ear canal, and shares some of the same nerve supply, patients will often complain of ear pain first.
Poor alignment of the teeth, jaw clenching or grinding (especially at night) or chewing preferentially on one side of the mouth can lead to abnormal stresses on the TMJ and cause the above symptoms.
Although most cases of TMJ dysfunction will respond to a soft diet, anti-inflammatory medications and heating pad, in more severe cases referral to an oral surgeon for operative repair is needed.
