Laser Skin Resurfacing

One of the more exciting developments in plastic surgery is the development of surgical lasers for rejuvenation of the fine wrinkles associated with aging and sun damage. While other methods exist for resurfacing, including chemical peels and dermabrasion, laser is appealing because the depth of resurfacing is more easily controlled and there is some evidence to suggest that the tightening it creates is superior to older methods.

Laser resurfacing actually vaporizes the outer layers of skin with minimal heat damage to the skin left behind. The collagen that makes up most of the dermis forms a more regular and tight weave of tissue and the epidermis that is vaporized is replaced by fresh epidermis that sprouts from the hair follicles and sweat glands. The skin is treated for two to four weeks leading up to the procedure with agents that stimulate skin turnover and block the production of pigment that can form following the procedure.

With proper care, the crusts that form as a consequence of healing separate by two weeks, but it’s important to know from the outset that there is redness for about three months that most patients cover with makeup. You will be presentable enough for the grocery store by two weeks and ready to entertain by three weeks to a month.

There is a significant amount to know about the care of your face both before and after the procedure, and our surgeons have developed written instructions to make the process easier. The best results come from meticulous care and a clear plan; make sure your surgeon has a lucid plan for care in mind and some sort of instruction sheet or you’re likely to be confused and unhappy.
