The most definitive way to evaluate the sinuses is to use a special type of computer assisted X-ray, known as a CT (or CAT) Scan. Until recently, when a patient needed a CT scan, we had to set-up an appointment at an outside facility and then visit with the patient once again to review the results. Since March of 2002, however, we have had an ‘on-site’ CT scanner.
Now when we determine a scan is needed, in most cases the scan can be performed immediately (generally taking about 15-20 minutes). The doctor can then review the scan with the patient, all at the same visit. This saves our patients time and allows our doctors to gather all the information needed to optimize patient care.
Our scanner is a Philips LX scanner ~ yielding beautiful thin-cut scans equal to any in the community. We currently are using the scanner to evaluate sinuses and facial fractures and are not scanning other parts of the body.
